Start Here: A Guide to ForeignCorrespondent
Welcome to ForeignCorrespondent. I spent almost three decades covering wars, revolutions, and history-making events for the Chicago Tribune. Today, I use that same lens to analyze our shifting world and to craft historical fiction that breathes life into the past. Whether you’re here for the analysis of today’s headlines or the escapades and adventures of fiction, this page will help you find exactly what you’re looking for.

If you’re here for Fiction, check out my historical fiction work:
While my journalism has always been rooted in the facts of the present, my historical fiction explores the echoes of the past. The award-winning Finding Billy Battles trilogy was born from the stories I couldn’t tell in a newsroom—the nuances of character, the grit of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the parallels between history and the world we live in today.
I discuss those nuances in my posts about writing—in my case, historical fiction. I believe that sometimes fiction is the best way to tell the truth. Through my trilogy, I explore themes of honor, regret, and the complexities of the human spirit amid great historical change and personal tragedy.
